San Giorgio

Barbara Prinoth

A botanical paradise.

Eucalyptus, cactus, olive trees, figs and palms . . . where are we? The Messnerhof in the village of San Giorgio above Bolzano has a botanical surprise in store for its visitors. A location with a climate in which such plants thrive is also a good place for the vines tended by the winegrower  Barbara Prinoth and her family. It offers perfect conditions for Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Bianco . . . and especially Moscato Giallo, a dessert wine that is sweet and refreshing at the same time.

Close to heaven.

Close to heaven.

Most local residents are familiar with the old stories about the Messnerhof, when the handsome farmhouse was an inn run by the sacristan (German: Messner) of the village church of San Giorgio. Today the little church, which dates back to the 11th century, is seldom used for religious purposes, but it is still a picturesque sight on its hill in the vineyards. Barbara particularly likes the place “because it has an incredible aura”. And indeed, from here you can see over the rooftops of Bolzano and feel close to heaven.

A result of hard work.

One can be forgiven for a touch of the transcendental and believing that the winemaker’s good mood and constant friendliness are the product of such a heavenly location, although that is the result of sheer hard work: Barbara not only coordinates the work in the vineyards but also looks after a family with three children. One is tempted to feel that her sunny disposition goes into the taste of the wine from the Messnerhof.

A result of hard work.
